in the garden

I'm no expert gardner.  In fact, I've had several failed gardens, and some partially successful attempts, but never a full working garden.  After the first summer here in Utah, we realized that this existing garden plot was infested with viney, invasive morning glory weeds.  The kind that spring up every inch of the soil, and wrap themselves around plants.  The roots go super deep into the ground, and from what I've read, it's practically impossible to get rid of!

So this year, I had Taylor and a neighbor boy build some garden boxes, and we laid layers of commercial-grade weed cloth underneath them.  We're hoping this helps keep the weeds from taking over!  By the time we finished fixing up the plot, we planted really late.  But we had a cold, rainy spring here, so our plants are coming up nicely.  And I'm so excited!!  I used mostly seeds this year, because I wanted to try some heirloom varieties...and it's such an amazing process to watch everything spring up out of the ground!

I have lots of helpers to keep tabs on things out there...

We still have work to do...I need to put up some trellises for vine plants.  And maybe some fencing, in case the goats escape their pasture for a snack.  Which did happen a few days ago.  Fortunately, they headed right for the apricot tree instead of the garden.  Unfortunately, they pulled down an entire branch, broke it off, and ate the leaves and apricots clean off it.  Bummer.

 Cool, spicy heirloom radishes...
 Peppers...

 Yummy lettuce in different varieties...
We've been eating delicious, fresh salads full of home-grown goodness and loving it!!
How is your garden growing?

Your garden looks great!!

We have square foot gardens and love it. Last year we figured out we don't get as much sun as our garden needs (we're in a townhouse and get shaded by our house or fence) for such a short growing season (we live in IF). We start our lettuce, peas, and beans from seed and transplant tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Anyway, the peas are doing well! We enjoyed the lettuce on our burgers last night. :)

I love the arrangement of those plant boxes! I hope to be able to get into some gardening too, when I have a home and such. Very cute. I wish your green thumb the best of luck.

Great garden! I love eating fresh fruit and veggies from my back yard. In Texas, I couldn't keep much alive and in Virginia, it all lives. Must be the weather. I hope it continues to provide yummy salads and great food for your family! :-)

Nice, looks good. My garden is pathetic this year. A ton of stuff never came up. We'll see how it turns out. The tomatoes are doing great though.

Looking good Trish. Let me know if that weed tarp keeps the morning glory down or not. I'm curious. I have one box that was built for me last year. It still did not get planted this year because the only sunny location for it has no water supply. Gotta work on that or it's never gonna happen in this heat pit. But my tomato plant is gang busters big, just not real plentiful. Not sure what I did there. I would love to really garden some day though. I love at my mom's how the kids can just go out in the yard and find something to eat. So fun!
