Look at all these darling boy prints!!

I stocked up on fabric last week at the Pine Needles 20% off sale. The entire store was on sale! I had noticed that the boy fabric in my stash was getting low, so I hunted around and found lots of cute prints to use for baby gifts.

We've been making lots of baby gifts lately, and our favorite go-to gift is chenille-backed burp cloths.

So simple and useful and cute for moms to carry around! Those photographed above are some I made years ago, and used for my last two girls. They hold up so well, and get softer and more absorbent with each washing. I loooove them!! I've made blankets out of the same fabrics/method as well. Just as cute as the burp cloths! For receiving blankets, I just use cotton on both sides for a lighter weight.

I make the burp cloths large enough to be used for a play-mat, changing pad, or even a small blanket, as well as a burp cloth. Super versatile. The fabric choices are endless, and they just turn out so darn cute!

Here's how to make them:

*Cut a generous rectangle of cotton quilting fabric. About 20" x 15".

*Cut the same size from a patterned chenille. (Mine is from the United Notions Warehouse in Texas, where I bought several bolts at less than cost! I still have a couple of bolts left, used exclusively for these baby gifts!)

*Then, pin them right sides together, and sew around the edges, leaving a 4-inch space for turning.

*Turn right side out, iron, and edgestitch.

So fast and easy, huh?

(I won't include in the instructions that I usually start making them 30 minutes before the baby shower or a new baby visit! But they really are so fast, that three can be made in no time at all, and they make such a great gift for a new mama!)

This past weekend, Hannah pitched in and made something for two of our new baby friends.

She made these cute baby hats. They only took her a couple of hours each, and they turned out so so great! She used Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande Hand Dye yarn for the lavendar hat below, and she held two strands together to get gauge. For the boy hat she made, she used a dark gray Blue Sky Alpaca outer yarn, held double.

holiday handmades--Hannah's pink sweater

Here's Hannah's Christmas sweater. Actually, this one was wrapped and put under the tree with needles still attached. I had only a few rows to go, but it just didn't get finished in time. I finally sewed the buttons on just yesterday, and Hannah was so excited to wear it!

I used this pattern...so darling!! And I love the gorgeous baby alpaca yarn from Kamille's. So so soft! Love!! To go up one from the largest size in the pattern, I used a size 11 needle, and made the armholes a bit bigger than the pattern instructed. It turned out nice and roomy, and I think Hannah will be able to wear it for a couple of years!

I looove seeing them all bundled up in handknits.

And on the not-so-chilly winter days we're having, wool vests are just the thing for running around outside. Not too much bulk, but just enough warmth to keep them nice and cozy.

Winter has finally arrived around here!
These chilly January days are for...

*staying by the fire in our pj's
*watching the snow fall through frosty windows
*peppermint tea and toast
*boiled wool slippers to keep our tootsies warm
*blooming paperwhites for a touch of nature indoors
*cozying up with wool
*drawing, planning, making
*creative type-written notes
*casting on.

And of course there's room for basketball practices and games, snowboarding, classes, horse lessons, etc.
But most of the days we spend all cozied up indoors. And I love it.

Slow and simple.

holiday handmades--Sarah's shawl

Here is Sarah's Christmas shawl. I fell in love with Alicia's version of this chauffe-coeur pattern. Isn't hers darling? But then I realized that the pattern is only available in french. I ordered a copy of it anyway, but decided it was just way too complicated!!

So, I found this similar pattern, changed the gauge and the stitch count, and basically winged it! I was so excited when it actually turned out how I wanted it to!! Well, except for the fact that I started out making it to fit Hannah, and it ended up many sizes smaller than I had intended. Thank goodness for little sisters!

I used Berrocco Vintage Chunky yarn from my stash. Not my favorite yarn, but it knit up soft and cozy as a shawl.

And this little girl loves it! Hooray!!

holiday handmades--Eliza's gray vest

Here's Eliza's Christmas sweater. (I never got around to blocking it...thus the rolling of the neck and bottom a bit.) I love how it turned out. And so does Eliza. She wears it all the time! Hooray!

I used JCasa's neighborly pattern again. Here's the first neighborly I made for little Sarah last Christmas. Such a simple and darling pattern! I used my new favorite yarn...Rowan's Cocoon. 80% merino wool, 20% kid mohair. It's warm and so so soft, with a slight fuzzy halo. Such a joy to knit with! Love! One of these days, I'll get around to posting my projects on ravelry too. Favorite place to browse knitting patterns. Favorite!

Much of this vest was knit on the sidelines of fall soccer games and practices, resting on a blanket, with late summer sun beating on my back, and cool evening breezes whispering the coming of a new season. And the rest was knit while listening a great audible version of Dickens' Little Dorrit, and then watching the 2008 mini-series film version. Excellent, excellent rendition! Loved it!

These memories of scenes playing out all around me as I knit a particular item, are what has endeared me to this (relatively) new hobby of mine. I bring my knitting bag wherever I go, and in all my spare minutes, I knit. And each finished sweater, hat, shawl, or sock carries with it the reminder of so many special moments of this beautiful time of my life...this busy, sweet, full, active time of mothering and nurturing the little people in my life. And then to see these littles romp around in the special bundle of stitches knit up just for them...it's bliss, I tell you!

Oh, and for those who asked, the clogs are from Crewcuts. Sven brand. On sale :).

toys, un-toys, and purging

Four different craft projects and a math book.

So much going at once!

Like mother, like daughter...

Today's cleaning day.

We need to do a big purge, and de-junk this place.

Our Christmas decor is finally all boxed up.

And the house feels empty.

It makes me want to clean.

The kids' rooms (ahem...and mine) are in disarray.

So are the closets and bookcases and baskets.

So much fun holiday partying leaves little time for organizing and cleaning!

I've been thinking a lot about Kyrie's un-toys post, available here. I love it.

And I read this fantastic article in December.

Such a great reminder that kids don't need a crazy assortment of plastic junk toys

to fill up space in our homes and in their lives.

My kids' favorite toys (or un-toys) are the great outdoors, books, craft supplies, and odds and ends for making stuff.

And that's pretty much all we need.

Plus some wooden blocks, a few dolls, and a small play kitchen with some little dishes.

Oh, and legos and balls for the boys, of course.

I find that they are more creative with their play, when they have less to dictate that play.

And with lots of free time during the day, they are really good at thinking up things to do.

I also believe that unscripted toys are best for childrens' imaginations. Toys that talk or have directions come with limited use, and also limit the child's opportunity to create his own play. Dolls, fabric, building materials, craft supplies, etc. are all unscripted and can be used in so many ways, according to a child's imagination.

So, off I go with my big black garbage sack

to gather up toys to be donated and tossed out!

I'm hoping to take some time this weekend to sort through the other clutter in my life as well.

The clutter in my schedule, in my mind, and in my soul.

This article is fantastic. The principles in it have helped me so much over the years.

There's more about this in her book as well. It's excellent!

Lots to think about as we enter a new year.

But what keeps coming back to me is

...simplify!!

holiday handmades: the dresses

I really, really tried to talk myself out of making holiday dresses this year. Our December had gotten so busy, and I had so many other projects in the works. I really needed to simplify. Besides, I could just make winter dresses in January, right? But I had made dresses almost every Christmas since the girls were little, and I just couldn't let it go.

So...I woke up early the morning of Christmas Eve, and since the presents were wrapped, and I had almost everything ready for Christmas, I decided to go for it. I would sew all morning, and I could have them finished by noon. Then there would still be plenty of time to brine the turkey, make lemon curd for the neighbors, finish knitting the Christmas sweaters, and cook our yummy seafood dinner. So, I went for it!

I used this Japanese sewing book, and this pattern. But I couldn't figure out which pieces to trace again, so I just upsized the pieces of the size 5 dress I had already made for Sarah. I used some beautiful, soft fine wale corduroy in three colors, and lined them with contrasting small-print 30's fabric. Not super "Christmas," but very holiday festive. I love how they turned out. Simple and classic. And the girls loved them too!

With the Christmas thrill and magic winding down, we're enjoying a slow and relaxing week-after, hanging around the house together.
I keep reflecting on our beautiful Christmas season,
feeling nostalgia and gratitude,
and decided to make a list of favorites,
so as not to forget what made it so wonderful:

Stockings hung by the chimney with care.
Lots of knitting (photos of the Christmas handmades to come!).
Making aprons from tea towels...super easy and fun! (thanks for the great idea, Mindy!)
A new nativity in the mail from my MIL. I love it! Thanks, Mom!
Making gingerbread, caramels, and lemon curd for friends and neighbors. Yum!
Seeing the lights at Temple Square.
A traditional family viewing of It's a Wonderful Life. Love!!
This beautiful short film. Such a special Christmas gift to the world!
A live nativity in our neighborhood...dressing up as shepherds and following Mary, on her donkey, to the stable up the street. Then visiting with neighbors over hot chocolate and barrel fires.
Hosting a great (and sticky) marshmallow fight (due to a lack of snow for a snowball fight), complete with PVC pipe launchers.
Piano and violin recitals, giving a feeling of good 'ol pride to this mama's heart.
Surviving the beginning of basketball season, with three players in three different leagues. (I knit almost an entire sweater vest watching my boys play in December!)
Christmas parties and celebrations.
An office party up at Park City's Olympic Park. Dining with great friends while watching the US and Russian ski teams train and perform amazing jumps live. Wow!
Deciding I just couldn't go a year without making holiday dresses for the girls...on Christmas Eve morning!
Seeing the girls twirl around in their new dresses and swedish clogs before our Christmas morning Church service.
Hearing the children of our neighborhood sing "gloooooria in excelsis deo" at the top of their lungs from the pulpit.
Watching a brave 10-year-old son sing a solo without flinching, even though the Church was packed to the rafters. He sang the verse, "Come to Bethlehem and see..." with such power, that I was convinced he would have been the one running through the town, telling everyone to come and see the newborn King, had he been there then.

Caroling to friends and neighbors.
Having another turkey dinner, with ham and all the trimmings, on Christmas Day. And having Mom and Uncle Todd here to eat and celebrate with us.
Lots of happy surprises on Christmas morning. Joy!
Feeling coziness and warmth as we gathered as a family by the woodstove, cherishing our time together. Soaking in the magic and wonder of the season. Together.

I always get a little nostalgic as we welcome in a new year. I have felt so much joy and happiness this year. I have felt so truly blessed. I have had some amazing experiences. I have learned so much and grown in so many ways. I have been blessed by so many wonderful friends.

However...

there is so much more to be learned. So many new roads to travel and paths to forge. So many opportunities on the horizon. It's time to begin a new season of growth and learning. And I'm ready to go!

christmas making

Oh my...

the Christmas making has kicked into high gear around here.

Almost every surface in this house is covered in supplies and scraps

and filled with little busy fingers at work.

It feels like Christmas!!

My cute 9-year-old has been our busiest elf. She made almost all of our cousin gifts by herself, including the darling stamped fabric pouches. She has cut out, wrapped, sewed, knitted, and MADE so many pretty things...I'm so proud of her!!

Her favorite handmade this year has to be yarn pom-poms. (tutorial here.) I can tell by the looks of the area rug, which seems to have morphed into a Christmas-colored shag rug! It is continually speckled with bright furry yarn trimmings, and an array of perfect little pom-poms. All of the kids have joined in the fun too. (you can imagine how many times we've emptied that trusty Dyson vacuum this December...)

And my cute littlest girls...making Christmas cards and gift labels all day. So much drawing, writing, and creating from such little hands. They beg to sew something at least twenty times a day too. But they still need mom's help for that. So when mom's busy, they make more cards. I love peeping over their shoulders to see what funny drawing they come up with. And it always makes my day!

And thank goodness for DesignMom's great handmade sibling gift ideas. We're using a bunch of them! Each child is making a batch of one type of gift for his/her siblings. I look forward to working with each of them one-on-one to create fun surprises for the other kids. I've hunted down all of the supplies, but most of the making will happen this week. Can't wait to show you the finished products!!

I have so many knitting projects underway as well, which need some serious time and attention, if they are to be completed by Christmas! I'm looking forward to lots of knitting this week. In front of a roaring fire and glowing tree. With a cup of tea and Pandora Christmas music playing.

Now, I've finished my breakfast of warm eggnog and sourdough bread with butter.

Christmas cards are all sealed, stamped, and ready to go. (thanks, Taylor and helpers!)

Now to finish packaging up the gifts to be mailed, and a quick (praying for short lines) trip to the post office.

The kids are doing chores and looking forward to an outdoor fire with s'mores and a marshmallow fight with friends this afternoon.

While I start that knitting by the fire...

in peace and quiet.

I love Christmas!!

advent calendar

To kick off the Christmas season, I always like to make something new to add to our decor.

This year, I decided to make an advent calendar. And I love how it turned out!!

I sewed little pouches, envelopes, and stockings, and hid treats and messages inside.

But my favorite thing about it was making a list of everything we want to do in December, and putting it into my calendar, which coordinates with the 25 pouches. It has helped me feel less worried about finishing "everything" before Christmas. We just take one day at a time! It's a great December stress solution!!

on homemade bread and soaked grains

When the chilly weather comes, our lighter summer fare is replaced by warm, nourishing comfort foods. Soups, breads, and baked goods are staples at our house.

Did you know that traditionally, grains, nuts, seeds, and beans were prepared by soaking, sprouting, or souring them before consumption? This makes them easier to digest and more nutritious. These foods are full of phytic acids which grab onto imprtant minerals in our bodies, depleting us of those minerals as we digest them. They also inhibit enzymes in our bodies, such as pepsin and amylase, which we need to digest our food. Soaking, sprouting, and souring helps neutralize the phytic acids in grains, nuts, seeds, and beans. Most (if not all) of the processed foods we eat are full of phytates, which contribute to rampant nutrient deficiencies, digestive disorders, tooth decay, and so many other health problems in today's society. Here's a great (very scientific) article describing this in depth, with great research and references. And I think the best book about real, traditional foods on the market is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. My second favorite is Real Food: What to Eat and Why by Nina Planck. Both discuss traditional methods of soaking grains and other foods. And so much more!!

About a year ago, a good friend taught me how to make soaked whole wheat bread. Her recipe is here. To neutralize the phytic acid in freshly ground whole wheat flour, you can soak it overnight in buttermilk, yogurt, or kefir. I do this in my Bosch mixer at night. And then in the morning, I add a couple of other ingredients to the mixer bowl, mix for a few minutes, and then roll it into bagels, donuts, buscuits, cinnamon rolls, or tortillas. This dough is rather heavy, and we prefer to use it for pastries rather than sandwich bread. We use the sourdough recipe for baking loaves, or sometimes purchase Ezequiel sprouted grain bread at the grocery store to keep in the freezer for toast and sandwiches. Our favorite way to use the soaked dough is to fry it in coconut oil for homemade donuts. While they are hot, we dip them in organic powdered sugar or sucanat and cinnamon. With raw milk, they make the best breakfast, snack, or dessert!

Another friend recently taught me how to make authentic sourdough bread. It's absolutely delicious!! I've only tried it with unbleached flour, but I plan on adding whole grains and doing some experimenting to make it more nourishing. It's such a simple method for no-knead breadmaking...I'm smitten!! And the starter cultures the flour, which neutralizes the phytates in the bread.

I have never made sourdough starter from scratch, because my friend generously shared some of hers. In the Nourishing Traditions book, there is a detailed recipe for sourdough starter, which calls for whole rye flour. But my friend made hers with unbleached flour with excellent results as well.

Below is a great video tutorial from the New York Times. I have been using this exact recipe for my sourdough bread, but substituting 1/4 cup sourdough starter for the yeast. This guy makes it look so easy. And it really is!!

We are loving our bread and pastries this winter. And knowing that they are nourishing and easy to digest is an added bonus to the yummy taste and smell of freshly baked homemade bread!

a little white paint, and lots of Christmas

So a couple of months ago, during a rain storm, we saw water streaming down the walls of the vaulted entryway of our house. The paint began to bubble up, and we put buckets under the upstairs dormers and under the entry leak. After working with insurance reps, a reconstruction company, and contractors, we began repairs. The roof's leaks were fixed, and flashings installed. Part of the sheetrock of the entry walls was cut out, and then replaced, textured, and painted.

I decided to cover the sky-blue entryway walls with my favorite white paint, Benjamin Moore's Regal Acrylic in Moonlight White, since they needed repainting anyway from the water damage. It turned out so lovely!! So clean and crisp looking. Like I always say, it's amazing what a little white paint can do!

Now, the entry railing is wrapped in glowing green garland, and feels so festive.

We went to the local tree lot to buy a beautiful Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. We put up most of our decorations that weekend, between rounds of leftovers, naps, and Christmas movies. But we keep adding to them almost daily, as new festive, pretty things are made or found or dreamed up.

Yesterday, the white snow began to fall outside, and seemed to paint the streets and trees with that glorious, pure white goodness, that makes the hearth and home feel even more warm and cheerful.

Stockings hang in a neat row from the mantle.

The fire blazes with warmth and comfort.

Green wreaths have been carefully placed in each front window and on the door (by a tall, daring, roof-climbing son), to welcome holiday visitors.

Pandora Christmas music echoes through the house all day long and into the night.

And festive Christmas favorites are played at the piano and violin, being perfected and polished for upcoming seasonal recitals.

Christmas cards have been ordered, and are on their way to me for addressing and mailing.

The sewing machine and serger hum constantly, turning out mama- and little girl-made gifts and decorations.

The click-clack of busy knitting needles sound from two little hat-makers and one over-ambitious, sweater-making mama, as they work to finish their projects before the big day.

The festive fragrances of hot apple cider and steamy hot cocoa fill the house daily.

Ahhh, the sights, sounds, and smells of Christmas at our house. I just want to breathe them all in.

In the rush that is the holiday season, I hope to move slowly and enjoy every minute of the making and celebrating and doing. But I especially hope to relish the opportunity to reflect upon Jesus Christ, who is our Savior and Redeemer, and whose birth we celebrate during this blessed time of year. (I use the symbol of the Christmas tree to help me with this...read how here!)

How is your Thanksgiving week shaping up?

We're celebrating alone at home, as a family. Which will be perfect.

I'm heading into the kitchen now to put some pumpkins to roast in the oven, and start some bread.

And then to the laundry room to wash and fold a couple more loads.

Then I need to run out and gather the rest of the spices and ingredients for my turkey brine.

And then out to dinner and Christmas shopping with the Mr.

I'd better get hoppin'!!

apple season

We are loving apple season this year! We try to purchase apples once in a while throughout the summer, when we're really missing them, but they just never taste good to us. So, we highly anticipate the harvest of juicy, fresh fall apples from our local trees.

Unfortunately, our sad, old apple tree has only produced a total of three apples since we moved in. So we rely on apples from neighbors' trees, and from our local apple orchard. A generous neighbor had a surplus of apples this year, so we went and picked several buckets of them.

With this year's apples, we have:

bottled yummy applesauce with some of our best friends. The boys and little girls waited in line most of the day for their turn to crank the strainer, and Hannah and her friend Claire chopped almost all of the apples for steaming. They were great helpers and we had such a fun canning day!

made caramel apples. Well, we haven't dipped apples as a family yet...it's on the November agenda. But I went to a friend's kitchen to learn how to make the fancy, chocolate covered variety with some ladies in the neighborhood. mmmmmm. So, so yummy and pretty.

sliced and baked them into yummy apple pies. Best pies ever. Fresh apples make all the difference. (sorry...no photo of the finished pies...they were gone before they had even cooled!

and of course, eaten lots of them raw, alongside our favorite Irish cheese. The perfect fall snack.

Today we're going to roast some apples. And perhaps make a few more pies. I love the spicy, sweet fragrance that fills my home on apple-baking days.

And this weekend, our local apple orchard is pressing again...can't wait to stock my fridge and freezer with their fresh raw cider. We drink it hot and cold all season long.

Now it's time for a snack. Apples and cheese on a pretty plate at the coffee table. While the kids kneel around the table in front of the fire and eat, I'll read aloud to them, and then we'll get going on our math, science, and grammar lessons.

fall harvest and real food

We pulled up the rest of the carrots, cabbages, chard, pumpkins, and squash from the garden this week. We had such a sunny October, which lengthened our harvest a bit. The kids and I are heading out there this afternoon to bring in the herbs, and gut out the rest of this summer's remains, which are looking rather dry and weedy and ready to retire for a long winter's rest. We expect snow tonight, so we'd better go dig everything out before it all freezes!

I'll be roasting pumpkins today to start making yummy pumpkin treats, soups, and custard. I love anything made of pumpkin! I want to try some of these recipes...don't they look delicious?

We've been adding grated carrots and chopped swiss chard to some of our favorite dinner dishes. We made this favorite gluten-free carrot cake this week. Yum!

Our favorite way to eat cabbage is chopped and sauteed in pastured butter or good olive oil, with shredded carrots and lots of Real Salt and pepper. It's one of our favorite comfort foods. I'd like to try to make fermented sauerkraut with my cabbage too, but we've eaten most of it! Maybe next year...

I love eating, preparing, and serving fresh, local, seasonal foods. And I love eating real foods. I read this great post about real food this morning. Summed up so well! Check it out. (Oh, and don't you love the photographed chicken foot in her header? Great photo!)

Hope you had a wonderful Halloween!

Here's a peak at this year's simple, easy costumes:

Romney went as Napoleon Dynamite. And he was in character most of the night. Oh my. Hilarious.

His borrowed wig was perfect...except for the color (Napoleon was a red-head), and the shedding (notice his hairy armpit...not part of the costume, just spare curls from the crazy wig!). Wish you could've seen him do the dance. So funny! I've never seen the movie, but I don't need to, after Romney's Halloween performance.

Taylor dressed up as a BYU football fan.

He wore a cool BYU vintage-style pilot cap, given to us by a friend, and a BYU sweatshirt.

Sam wanted to be a superhero. He bought a Thor mask and a dollar store ax, and together with a black cape, he made a very brave looking barbarian superhero.

The girls wanted to dress up as some kind of princess or fairy. So, we decided to make them "snow fairies." We sewed up quick sparkly silver skirts, made up their hair and face with glittery snowflakes, and in their velveteen capes, they looked darling! They even made little snowflake wands out of sticks, silver pipe cleaner, and glittery snowflake ornaments. Cute, cute!

We made homemade caramel popcorn and watched It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Then we celebrated Brandon's birthday with a yummy chili dinner. We all went out trick-or-treating, and visited with lots of friends in the neighborhood. We had a great holiday.

I'm sad to see October go...I love the beautifully colored leaves and crisp fall air. We've had such perfect weather here, and we've enjoyed our last weeks of outside-all-day play. I love fall!! Now, dearest November, be kind and give us more of this beautiful fall sunshine!!

My good friend and very talented photographer, Jami, took our family portraits yesterday.
She found the most gorgeous spot at the base of our mountains, and we met her there for the shoot.
The fall evening air was chilly and crisp.
The sun was peaking out from behind passing clouds, sending rays of perfect soft light over the valley as it set.
We stood in a golden field, surrounded by trees, with painted mountains glowing in the background.
It was unbelievable. Perfect.
Forget about the photo shoot...I just wanted to park myself in that field until dusk and stare at the beauty around me!

The kids were great, and they all looked beautiful in their (very carefully selected) muted gray and blue attire. It's not easy trying to get all eight of us to coordinate!

I didn't have what I wanted for little Sarah to wear, so yesterday morning I pulled out one of my Japanese sewing books, and whipped up a darling little dress. The pattern was a bit tricky to decipher, but it was simple and lovely! I did have to draft up my own bodess front, since I couldn't find it anwhere on the pattern prints, but I was so happy to get into my studio and sew, and, though it's not flawless, I think the little dress turned out so cute!

Sarah was happy too. She stayed with me for the duration of the project, (minus a few excursions to the kitchen to get a snack), while the other kids played outside. When she saw that I was a little frustrated with the pattern (I had traced two of the wrong pieces because they were labeled only in Japanese), she suggested I just go to China real quick and learn to speak Japanese, so that I could read my pattern! :) I told her it would take too long because I had to finish the dress today, so she settled on singing and playing me some (improvised) music on the piano, to help me "sew better." And it did. How we laughed at her lyrics and hilarious conversation. I love that girl!!

My first baby girl is nine today!! I can't believe it!

She is our calm, loving peacemaker. She keeps her room perfectly organized and clean. She loves to make things (like her mama), and knows how to knit, sew, embroider, and cook. She rides horses, plays a mean game of soccer, and makes beautiful music on the violin. She works hard, and is a perfectionist at all she does. She's got amazing talent!

Funny...neither of us were ever animal people.

But with this little patch of land, we've been able to spread out a bit and speckle it with life.

I love looking out the kitchen window while I wash dishes.

and cats at play, wandering, lounging, wrestling, and chasing around the yard.

We had another amazing visit to the big city.

Some good friends of ours let us stay in their gorgeous apartment while we were there.

It overlooked Central Park, and the view was breathtaking!!

loving fall

The weather has been gorgeous. Sunny, breezy, cool...perfect. And we've been loving every minute of it!

Today it turned cold with clouds and rain, and we almost lit up the woodstove with our first fire of the season...almost. I'm ready to bundle up in wool sweaters and blankets and hot cocoa...and stare at the blaze in the stove.

But until it's bitter cold out there, I'm sending the little ones out all day, to soak up every last ounce of that blazing autumn sunshine. We're harvesting what's left of our summer garden, and watching the pumpkins and squash ripen in their glory. We attended a session of General Conference in Salt Lake City and felt so inspired by the speakers and the array of good people gathering there. We've been busy with out of town visitors, drives up the canyon to see the leaves change color, taking care of my dear mom who underwent knee surgery, and planning a fall weekend getaway. And lots more.

Busy, bustling fall. How I love you!!

a birthday

This darling birthday girl does not need a special day to see that life is beautiful and happy and great!!

She has always been a ray of sunshine in our home. I wish I had her knack for seeing the good and beautiful in everything around her. I have to work at it...but for her, it's natural. And I love it. When things feel grim at all, I just look into her little eyes, and feel that happy zest for life.

We celebrated birthday number 6 with pizza and BYU Creamery ice cream (now sold in $1.00 cones right up the street...yum!). And of course we went around the dinner table, and each told Eliza what we loved about her. And she loved every minute of it. We also spent an hour at the park, and the afternoon playing outside with good friends. And the new litter of baby kittens were finally ready to hold, just in time for her birthday. Papa and Nana come to visit tomorrow, so we'll make a cake and do more celebrating this weekend while they are here to join us.

And of course, there were gifts.

And her favorite gift, given by our cute neighbor girl (who Lizzy quite adores),

her very own ukulele!

The strummin' and singing hasn't stopped. Perfect for this music-loving girl of mine!

Romney had a stellar performance at this year's fall strings recital. We always try to attend recitals and sporting events as a family, and enjoy cheering each other on...except for the little people, who get a bit wiggly and disinterested (bored), and choose to lay on the floor and color instead of pay attention to the performers. But we love these events. And just as much as I love to watch my kids perform and compete, I love equally the excitement and support shown by siblings as they look on.

I must say that music recitals are great moments for parents. However, getting to the recitals can be arduous, time-consuming, and sometimes just plain torture. Coming from a musical background, I have struggled for years with firming up my own philosophy on music training in the home. It's one of those tricky parenting quandries, which varies from family to family and often, child to child. Do we force our children to play a musical instrument? Do we choose the instrument, or let them decide? At what age should they begin formal lessons? What if they end up hating it? How long do we make them stick with it before giving it up? Oh my. Tricky, indeed.

After years of working on this in theory and practice, I have no perfect answers...but I've found that our experience with this has followed the same pattern as many of the other experiences we've had as parents.
Lots of prayer and consideration of the individual needs of each child.
Lots of experimentation and uncertainty.
Lots of trying to be patient and flexible.
Sometimes we have begun on one path, only to find out later that the chosen path was not right for that specific child. We tried forcing the child to continue with the instrument he chose to begin with, but our relationship with him was strained by this, and we decided that the relationship was more important than the musical training. We waited ample time (over a year), to make sure it wasn't just a rough patch, and could see that the child truly did not love playing that instrument. It was obviously not his passion. So we allowed him to go to his teacher and have a frank talk about quitting the lessons; and then to choose another instrument. Our rule is that each child (over eight years old) must be learning to play at least one instrument at all times.

At first this really bothered me. Quitting! I felt like we had wasted so much time and money on their lessons. And that we had let them give up, instead of sticking with what they had begun. But as I've watched these boys, I see that they have learned discipline during these years of daily practice, in the process of figuring out which instrument suited them best. And I feel that their early strings experience provided great ear training for their other instrumental pursuits. All good music ties together in history, theory, and sound. And I believe that to immerse children in the rigorous course of quality musical study, no matter the type, provides an added layer of depth to their education and refinement. But at a certain point, we have felt the need to back off, and let the child (or youth) decide to take his practice and progress into his own hands (with our support, of course). And if he just wasn't willing to do this, it was plain to us that it was time for him to move on to something that he could be passionate about.

Other children of ours began playing an instrument and loved that instrument enough to stick with it. They have still had those rough spots, where the music gets more challenging and they have had to work really hard to learn it. However, the kids who love their instrument have worked their way through those times, and gotten past them successfully. In other words, they don't always love practicing and going to lessons, but they do it with a good attitude, and work hard to get past the difficult times. They show continued interest, and are willing to invest their time and energy in order to progress. Although I may need to remind them to practice occasionally, I don't force them. These kids practice on their own, because they know that's what it takes to become great at what they love.

One thing that I feel strongly about is that in order for kids to succeed in learning and loving music, they need to be inspired to do so at home. We play classical music and learn about composers. We sing together. We do family recitals and perform for one another, often inviting friends to join in. We try to go to local concerts and musicals as often as we can. We expose our children to different venues in which music is sung and played beautifully. They feel of its importance. And its power. And I believe that this has encouraged them to want to make music a part of who they are.

So...

We're still working on settling into a nice fall "school" routine.

I can't say that everyone made it to 6:45am family scripture study every day this week. Nor that we all practiced our instruments during our assigned half-hour time slot every morning. Nor that I woke up early to exercise, as planned, before awaking the masses every day.

But there was learning.

And that's my metric.

We're finishing up/reviewing last year's study of Ancient History and Old Testament as a family. We're doing daily reading, writing, and arithmetic lessons. We're making things...with paint, yarn, and fabric. We're doing projects (yes, still in that basement, trying to make it functional and beautiful!). We're working together. And we're reading. Lots.

Both big boys kicked off the school year last month with an online Study Skills Seminar through Williamsburg Academy (an online private high school which Taylor is attending this fall). They studied speed-reading, book/essay annotation, note-taking, etc. I loved that they read and discussed these two essays. Just the titles inspire me to want to read and study more. Especially Invitation to the Pain of Learning. I'm so glad my boys know that scholarly learning should be painful and that it takes work. Thinking hard can hurt!

One son is studying Civil War History. He and I are reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. Such a powerful book. It's my second time through it, and I've shed even more tears this time. Oh how I love that kind, generous, strong Uncle Tom. And dear little angelic Evangeline. And that brave mother, Eliza, with her smart and noble George. I love what they teach me about gratitude and goodness; about faith and freedom. How they lift my thoughts to a higher plane. How they strengthen my convictions. Fictional as they are, they are my heroes...as are all the real men and women who suffered gravely at the hands of unmerciful masters, under unmerciful laws, through the woes of slavery or other earthly oppression, while trusting in God for a greater life hereafter.

Another son is studying The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and creating power point slides with his "epiphanies." He gave the whole family a presentation for our Family Home Evening this week, and I was bubbling over as he described paradigm shifts, and used our family relationships as examples. He is also reading a book called Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln for a Public Speaking class. And he just finished As a Man Thinketh by James Allen, and has started The Count of Monte Cristo again.

The youngest boy is exploring his way through his brothers' fantasy collection, one first chapter at a time. Maybe he'll dive in and finish one of them soon!! But probably not until the weather turns too cold to stay outside with the animals all day...

The little girls are sounding out words like champs, and the oldest daughter is reading through the Narnia Series on her own, and has a running list of all of the books she wants to read this school year.

Learning is happening. And after years of worry and wondering, I'm learning to see it. It doesn't always manifest itself in test scores or homework assignments. Or even in completed written work. But it shows. I see it in art projects and drawings. I hear it in conversations and vocabulary. It shows in character and attitudes and behavior. I find it in the back seat of the car, as a son and a friend trade opinions on why the founding fathers didn't put an end to slavery if they were such great leaders. I find it in the basement, as the laptop shows three boys conferencing on Skype, practicing debates on a variety of subjects from guns to ipods. Or when I hear a son delivering a speech to his online classmates and mentor, who listen and give feedback from Alaska and California and Maine. I see it in wee hours of the morning, when the oldest has awoken (on his own), showered (without being ~~begged~~ asked), and is reading the scriptures, all ready for early morning Seminary at a local charter school. And when I see him studying long hours each day, trying to finish assignments and preparing for classes.

Learning. It's part of our family culture. It's something we love. And live. I'm seeing it take form in our children. And I hope its great fire blazes inside of each of their souls, so as to be forever unquenchable.

Cleo

Grandma Cleo (Brandon's sweet 98 year-old grandmother) passed away a few weeks ago in his parents' home in South Carolina. Brandon was there. In fact, at the very moment of her passing, he was in the next room, offering a blessing on the family meal, and pleading with the Lord to allow her to rest, if it was to be her time to go. It was her time. And she passed peacefully, with her family gathered around her.

A few months previously, Brandon and his two brothers had planned a boys' weekend. They were all to fly in and play in a volleyball tournament, golf, and spend time together with their family (Dad, Mom, sister, plus extended family) back home. Cleo, being cared for full-time by Brandon's parents in their home, had been fading fast. Nobody expected her to make it until that upcoming boys' weekend. But her dear son asked her to wait, and she held on. She had stopped eating and drinking, but still she held on.

She had been unresponsive for a few days, but when Brandon (first to arrive) stood by her side, she woke up and spoke to him. She asked how he was, and how the kids and I were doing. She was lucid, and happy to see him. She told him that she had been to Heaven and back. She lingered here in mortality, so that she could be with her entire family one last time. The other grandsons flew in, the family spent a wonderful weekend with her, and then she passed away.

I hopped on a flight the next day, to go be with the family and attend the funeral. It was amazing. We gathered in a beautiful old church downtown...the Methodist church Cleo had attended most of her life. As I looked around at her friends and family, I pondered the influence of one person upon so many others. I looked into the faces of Cleo's old friends, her sons, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. So many people there together, because of her. So many people brought into existence through her. So many people built on her goodness and character...the principles she taught and lived playing an important role in the forming of who they had become. Her great legacy will live on through generations to come.

Funerals seem to be made for pondering and reflection. Seeing her cold, lifeless little body tucked into the billowy white satin lining of that elegant coffin. Touching her cold, manicured hands. Noticing a stillness of body that seemed unreal and foreign. Knowing that she wasn't occupying that space in existence any longer. That she was in a different place. And wondering. About the great beyond. About where she really was then, what she was doing in that earthly moment, as I gazed at her former now-empty mortal residence.

When set to pondering such weighty and eternal matters, the tendency to question arises. To question the meaning of mortality and eternity. To question what one really believes to be true about life and death.

Questions came to me in my pondering, that day in the beautiful old chapel. And answers came as well. I felt the soft stirrings in my soul, sent from a higher realm. The Heavenly feelings of peace and assurance, given by a merciful God who loves his children through this mortal experience. A God who has answers and will give them when we ask. And who answers quietly, privately, speaking softly to our innermost souls.

Life is miraculous. Death is equally so. The bringing of life into this world, and the taking of life from it, is the work of God. I know it as I know my own hands. I have felt it so powerfully, that I can't deny it.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me; because I live, ye shall live also.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

soaking up summer

Can't believe summer's almost at an end.

We're trying to enjoy what's left of it!

The kids have been out playing soccer in the dewey morning grass, riding bikes to the park in the afternoon heat, and just hanging around outside, enjoying their break from study and structure. They're finishing up some fun summer reading, and getting ready to dig back into the classics and put on their dusty math and science caps.

As for me, I enjoyed a little Park City getaway last week with my man. We stayed at this beautiful mountain resort and it was amazing! I love to escape every now and then and have a little adventure, just the two of us. But I have to admit, I was not looking forward to this one quite as much, because it was a business getaway. Not that I don't enjoy those, but if I'm going to go through the work and preparation that goes along with leaving the kids at home with a sitter (in this case, my wonderful mom), I like to be alone just the two of us, and relax.

So I met Brandon at the hotel (gorgeous, beautiful, dreamy place) and got all dressed up...
and we actually had a great time! I felt like I got a fresh perspective on what the Mr. does and who he deals with on a daily basis. Inspiring. And intimidating. So glad it's him and not me. I'm very content in my little world of home and family and community. Business? Glad that's his realm. Thankful that he works hard. And that he loves it. And that he isn't scared out of his socks to shoot the breeze with and deliver presentations to dozens of high net-worth investors and CEO's. Because I would be.

But what I loved the most about the conference? Meeting so many amazing people. No matter how high profile they were, or what their business or background, these were good, good people. Good to the core. We chatted about parenting and education and social media and teenagers and toddlers. We ate a fancy dinner together and listened to an amazing guest speaker (who made me feel rather ignorant, with his vast knowledge and experience...wow!). And, who happened to need a ride to the airport, along with his wife and colleague. Ahem, never thought I'd have a four-star general in my car. One of the most interesting, memorable drives of my life! Good people, I tell you. And not bad to know that someone like that has your back, either :)!

And so our lovely summer adventures come to an end. I'm finalizing our fall study schedule this week, so we'll be ready to go after Labor Day! I'll miss the lazy days of summertime, however I'm looking forward to getting back into a routine. And I'm looking forward to pumpkin pie. And pumpkin muffins. And pumpkin bread. And fires on the hearth. And knitting. Ah, fall!

another summer dress and a jumper

Here is another pretty little summer dress, like these. This one was made quite a while ago, but Hannah looked so darling in it the other day, that I had to snap a few photos. I love the orange/purple combination with the large motif (I think the fabric is Amy Butler). And the shirring? Simple and so fun! Try it if you haven't!

This is how: First, cut the fabric to a length about 5 inches longer than you want the dress to be, leaving the width of 45 inches. Sew a tube from the fabric, folding it right sides together, along the existing width of the fabric. Iron and hem the edges, and then wind elastic thread onto the bobbin by hand. Then, begin about a half-inch from the top of the dress, and sew on the right side of the fabric from the top down, in a spiral pattern, leaving about a quarter inch between stitch rows. Continue sewing in the spiral pattern until the shirring is as long as you'd like it to be. When finished, make sure and back-stitch several times, so the elastic stitching doesn't come undone. Then, use the steam setting on your iron, or spray with water and iron. The steam makes the shirring shrink up.

After I have the tube, I add straps for sleeves, or use Dana's method of adding puffed sleeves to the shirred dress. I basically cut into the shirring and sew on the sleeves. Then I sew more shirring on the arm opening, and on the shoulder. Easy, peasy!! I love these darling summer dresses and I'm sure we'll be making more for next year!

I wore my summer dress again last Sunday, and I still love it! (My pattern from Built by Wendy Dresses.) I LOVE summer dresses, but I'm getting excited for some fall and Christmas sewing. I've already picked out some new fine wale corduroy for Christmas dresses, and some ticking stripe fabric for cute fall girly duds. Can't wait to get started!!

But first, it's review week, and then we start a new year of homeschool next week! Busy, busy! I'm sure I can sneak in some sewing time though...I always do!

a birthday and a new coat

Little Miss Sarah turned four years old this week. My baby...FOUR!! I can't believe it!

And guess what? I finally sewed up that third Wanderings Coat, which has been all cut out and collecting dust for (ahem) almost two years. Whew! So glad it still fits! This has to be my all-time favorite pattern. Love it so so much! It is by the lovely ladies at Sugar City Journal. Go peruse their beautiful blog, if you haven't been there. They are so talented!!

Sarah's favorite fairy tale is the story of Rapunzel. So, inside the coat, she stars as Rapunzel, with Daddy as the handsome prince charming. I photocopied their pictures on Printed Treasures fabric, and backed it with wool felt, so they look authentic and stay put on the fabric when a scene is being played out.

Also tucked into the zippered pockets: A royal cape and tall boots for the prince, the prince's trusty steed, and a pink wool cape to keep the princess warm in all her wanderings. And let's not forget the most important accessory: a princess crown with Rapunzel's long, golden locks. Oh, and Sarah just informed me that we need an evil witch. And she thinks I should use a picture of ME! The nerve!! :)

This darling little princess fills our home with energy and love. She is so sweet and good, with just enough spunk to keep us on our toes, and bring laughter to every situation.

hello again and family work

Wow! Posts have been sparse this summer! I suppose there are times when other things take precedence over blogging. This summer has been one of those times for me. Not because anything spectacularly great or tragic has happened around here, but because life just needs to be lived sometimes, without thinking about capturing it in words and pictures. And it has felt good.

But do you know what? When I'm away from this little spot, I miss the creative side of blogging. I miss seeking the perfect moment or scene to snap up, which when photographed, speaks an entire silent story. And I miss the deep thoughts that come as I sit and ponder the events of my days, and look for the beauty and principles surrounding or stirring them. I learn about myself when I write. I learn about life, love, and people. And when I don't write, I feel a void...like I'm not seeing all there is to see around me, or learning all there is to learn from my experiences. I hope to keep making time to fill this blog with what I see and feel and understand in this little life I'm living. I see more, love more, and feel more as I put it all into words and pictures. Thank you, friends, for sharing it with me!

So, where did we leave off?
Oh, that awful x-ray picture. I know y'all are ready to see a new photo at the top of this blog, huh? (Um...can you tell I've spent a little time in the south since my last post? What I meant was you all. Yes, much better on my grammar-happy ears.)

To put an end to the one-of-those-weeks we were having, I took my wise friend Jenny's advice and gave the kids a big project (thanks Jenny dear, and thank you all, for all the wonderful comments and advice!). It turned out that hard work was just the thing we all needed! The project? We dug a fire pit in the backyard. Dad was out of town, so the boys did all the tough digging. And they did great! They worked together, with the help (or well-meant hindrance, perhaps) of the little girls, and the rough week seemed to dissolve into oblivion (thank heavens!). We finished within a couple of hours, and then had friends over for roasted bison hot dogs, s'mores, and night games. We still admire our masterpiece every time we look out the back windows. We're so excited for this new and exciting place to gather as a family on chilly fall evenings!

And because of the week, and the project, I remembered just how great family work can be for family relationships. In fact, it drew me back to one of my favorite articles about family work, which I read years and years ago, and have gone back to so many times since, is by By Kathleen Slaugh Bahr and Cheri A. Loveless. You can read it here. And please, please do! It is excellent!

Here is an excerpt:

My father and mother read us stories about their parents and grandparents, and it was clear that both my father and mother had worked hard as children. Working hard was what families did, what they always had done. Their work was "family work," the everyday, ordinary, hands-on labor of sustaining life that cannot be ignored--feeding one another, clothing one another, cleaning and beautifying ourselves and our surroundings. It included caring for the sick and tending to the tasks of daily life for those who could not do it for themselves. It was through this shared work that we showed our love and respect for each other--and work was also the way we learned to love and respect each other.

I love that definition of family work. I really believe it, too. Through shared work we show our love and respect for each other, and learn to love and respect each other. Even when it's easier to sweep my own floors than teaching a child to do so. Or when I can't keep track of how many times I've had to remind a 10-year old to finish washing the dishes...all of them. Or when the dish-washer and floor-sweeper argue the entire span of their chore time (and the broom may have to be confiscated for being used as a weapon...maybe). And even when we have chickens and cats and goats (and their smelly mess) coming out our ears, so that our kids can experience the character-building benefit of "real work." I can honestly say that it is all worth it, to gain that mutual love and respect.

We all know that the results of kids' work are not always equal to those of the work of much more experienced and capable adults (can't you see all those crumbs still spread out under the table??!!). And that getting kids to join in working is sometimes worse than pulling teeth. But with the trade-offs and all (spotless house and immaculate yard vs. kids with character, right?!), working together has truly blessed our family.

Another favorite quote from the above article:

How does ordinary, family-centered work like feeding, clothing, and nurturing a family--work that often seems endless and mundane--actually bless our lives? The answer is so obvious in common experience that it has become obscure: Family work links people. On a daily basis, the tasks we do to stay alive provide us with endless opportunities to recognize and fill the needs of others. Family work is a call to enact love, and it is a call that is universal. Throughout history, in every culture, whether in poverty or prosperity, there has been the ever-present need to shelter, clothe, feed, and care for each other.

Working together has taught us to love and respect each other in real ways. Hannah recognizes and appreciates how I have nurtured her, as she bathes, dresses, and tucks in little girls at night. She admires big brothers as they teach her how to care for the animals or scramble eggs. Brothers thank each other for taking over an assigned chore while the other is away at scout camp, or is too tired to walk out to the barn one night. And Mom and Dad feel grateful when everyone pitches in to keep things in order around here. And all of those priceless moments dancing to some good tunes or singing together while working side-by-side? Awesome. I think this new fire pit will always remind me of the great power of family work. When I look out on it, it will speak back to me of the importance of steadfastness and diligence in teaching my family to work together. It will remind me that those tough weeks will come, but that as we work together as a family, our relationships will become ever stronger, tying us together in mission and purpose. And as we gather around the fire together, I hope we will feel the strength and comfort of that love and warmth we have created through living and working
together
as a family.

It has been one of those weeks. We all have them. Those weeks when you ask yourself if anything you're teaching as a parent is sinking in. Times when the behavior of your children manifests that the definite answer to that question is a resounding NO. On all fronts.

On Saturday, Sam did a flip on the couch (against house rules), and knocked his knee on his nose for an aching, bloody mess. Fifteen minutes later, Eliza swallowed the quarter that her dad and I had both asked her to get out of her mouth. This led to severe pain in her back, and we couldn't tell which way the quarter had gone down. Needing to make sure it wasn't lodged in her esophagus or trachea, we took her to an urgent care place for an examination and some x-rays, where the doctor told us that it may have to be surgically removed. What? We tried one last desperate measure: an entire can of Sprite and some bread, accompanied with lots of jumping up and down. Another x-ray showed that the quarter had finally moved down into her stomach, and the doctor felt confident it would pass naturally through her system...whew!

In Church the next day, we sat in a long row toward the front of the chapel. Suddenly, one of our girls smacked her sister so hard, that the very audible violence echoed through the building, disrupting the nice discourse from the pulpit about being Christlike. After a consequence and lecture, that same hitting sister bit the same poor victim on the cheek the next day, leaving teeth-mark bruises on her face. And after another consequence and more lecturing, she kicked her big sister in the gut. One son has been sent to his room at least eight times each day, and has earned a total of 20 extra chores for misbehavior (all in the past five days), and I can't remember the last time he had any privileges of any sort. All the while, another son can't stop teasing younger siblings. Oh my.

Then...

one very sensitive son made everyone dinner last night, while wearing mom's frilly apron :), and set the table so beautifully and thoughtfully. I told him that I would vacuum the kitchen rug and sweep the floor for him (his kitchen jobs) since he made dinner, but he did it himself anyway, cheerfully.

On our bike ride yesterday, the big boys voluntarily pumped up tires and tuned up little bikes, and then stayed behind to wait for and help tired little sisters. They even offered to push the big stroller (full of library books and a heavy toddler) for me so I could ride instead. We had a fun library visit, where the biggest brother helped everyone find and check out books. Our picnic in the park was delightful, and we shared and talked and had a great time together.

The girls went right to sleep last night when I tucked them into bed early, and the boys came right in from scouts and kissed me and went to bed on their own. The eight year old made scrambled eggs all by herself for breakfast, and bathed and dressed her little sister without my asking. The little girls haven't argued all morning, and the teasing teenage son woke up in a better mood today. I even caught him on the couch reading a story to a little sister.

And thus it is with parenting and families.

We parents work hard and put our very best effort into raising good, honest, well-behaved children. We teach, model, nag, lecture, and wear ourselves out to make sure they know the difference between right and wrong. But they are still just children. Lately, I have literally found myself thinking, "why can't they just think and act rationally, like adults?" Umm...because they are not adults. They are children. And they will be children for a looooong time before they become adults. And being children means learning how to think and act. That learning how includes lots of messing up. Lots of making mistakes and repeating mistakes. Lots of trying and failing. Lots of painful consequences. Therein, my friends, lies the tricky part...the part that requires parents to have super-hero levels of patience.

I yearn for sublime and peaceful family relationships. For refined, educated, faithful, children, who have integrity and a passion for goodness and life. This is the greatest desire of my heart, and I think about it constantly. At times, it consumes me. I try to fill my mind with knowledge and my heart with inspiration, so as to lead them in this direction. And I find parenting principles everywhere...

In good movies. We watched Emma for girls' movie night yesterday (while the boys were at scouts)...parenting principles, why yes indeed!

In the books I read. Little Britches? Yes, parenting. Pollyanna? For sure. Just finished those two, and I'm so glad to know Pollyanna's dad and Ralph's parents well enough to know what they would say or do in my shoes. These parents in literature are a great support network for me!

In interacting with people of all types and ages. In the greatness of others, I see who I want to become. I see families with that special something that I want ours to have. I see dedicated parents who inspire me to work harder. I see fantastic youth who are still learning, but beautifully becoming capable adults.

And of course, in scripture. The teachings of the Savior are my parenting handbook. I want to be like Him.

Yes, the principles are out there...all around us. But how to implement them all? That will come with time and patience, and with regular day to day living. And lots of prayer.

So for now, I'm trying hard to create a family culture that inspires greatness. In me and my children. In the way we arrange our home. In the schedule we keep. In the books and media to which we expose ourselves. In the way that we speak and act. In our daily rhythms and interactions. In what I do with my time and talents, with little learning eyes ever watchful. In how I treat my husband, and others. If my children can feel confident and comfortable in a refined home environment, my hope is for them to become the kind of people that can inspire refinement and greatness in others. The kind of people who are refined and confident all on their own, as they become independent of this place called home. The kind of people who will someday be ready to report to a much more refined Heavenly home. (read this article on home culture...fantastic!)

Needless to say, I expect weeks like these, where the bitterness of dealing with mistake-making seems to overpower the sweetness of mothering. And I try to remember to be glad for the mistakes (Pollyanna's kind of glad amidst despair, of course), for they are the moments that welcome an opportunity for my children (and their mama) to learn. But all the while, we can feel grounded in the cozy comfort of this home culture we have created. We all love it. No matter the rough patches.

We're also reading Laddie aloud as a family again...this book is about a darling little sister and a brave, kind, generous big brother. Oh, and a calm, patient, hard-working mother. And a happy home culture. I hope we are all inspired as we read!

in the garden

I'm no expert gardner. In fact, I've had several failed gardens, and some partially successful attempts, but never a full working garden. After the first summer here in Utah, we realized that this existing garden plot was infested with viney, invasive morning glory weeds. The kind that spring up every inch of the soil, and wrap themselves around plants. The roots go super deep into the ground, and from what I've read, it's practically impossible to get rid of!

So this year, I had Taylor and a neighbor boy build some garden boxes, and we laid layers of commercial-grade weed cloth underneath them. We're hoping this helps keep the weeds from taking over! By the time we finished fixing up the plot, we planted really late. But we had a cold, rainy spring here, so our plants are coming up nicely. And I'm so excited!! I used mostly seeds this year, because I wanted to try some heirloom varieties...and it's such an amazing process to watch everything spring up out of the ground!

I have lots of helpers to keep tabs on things out there...

We still have work to do...I need to put up some trellises for vine plants. And maybe some fencing, in case the goats escape their pasture for a snack. Which did happen a few days ago. Fortunately, they headed right for the apricot tree instead of the garden. Unfortunately, they pulled down an entire branch, broke it off, and ate the leaves and apricots clean off it. Bummer.

Yesterday, I was gathering up the masses for a long morning of errands around town. Because we're in project mode. Again. (I can't wait to show you the progress in the basement! Finally!!) I told little Sarah to go fetch her (rugged) Keen sandals to strap on, so her chubby feet would be comfortable for an inevitably lengthy perusal of IKEA, which was on the morning agenda. She asked me if she could please wear her white Sunday shoes (tiny peep-toe slingbacks), but I told her no, because she might get blisters on her feet from all the walking. Her reply struck a chord with this beauty-lovin' mama: "But Mom, they're so pretty and they make me feel happy." She wore the white shoes on our errands, and didn't complain once as she clicked and clacked her way across the hard IKEA floors.

I, too, feel happy when I take a few minutes in the morning to put on something pretty. It usually isn't anything fancy or high-fashion, but if my clothes, hair, and face are in order, I feel more ready to take on the day's tasks...even if I'm only working inside my home. I have noticed that when I feel good about myself, my overall attitude is more positive, and I can turn my focus outward, toward serving others, because I have already taken care of myself. And truly, the atmosphere in my home is happier and more peaceful when I feel good. When I wallow around in my pj's all day (which admittedly happens more often than I'd like it to happen), I feel mopey and sluggish, and don't seem to accomplish as much.

Don't get me wrong, I can shoot hoops with the best of them, and I love to throw on a hat and hike up into the mountains. I don't wear make-up to the gym, and if you see me on a Saturday, I'll most likely be sporting my spandex bike-shorts, post-ride, or I'll be out with a big dorky sun-hat, covered in dirt, working in the garden.

However, I feel like it is important for me to embrace my femininity, and work at modeling that for my daughters. I want them to see me in my pretty aprons, scrubbing the kitchen counters or preparing a meal. I want them to be trained in the womanly arts of creativitiy and homemaking, and look forward to being a wife and mother. I want them to know that a woman's role in the home is of utmost importance, and that it brings joy and happiness. I want them to see me reading scriptures and good books and spending time studying history and writing, so they feel an excitement for education and learning. I want them to realize that a world-class education will enrich their lives and enable them to be a powerful influence on others, especially those whom they will train up in their own homes someday.

So, we spend time cooking, baking, gardening, and cleaning together. We read good books together...the kind that speak beautifully of motherhood and womanhood, such as the Little House series. We also spend time learning how to wash and iron and care for clothes, how to sew and knit pretty things, and how to fix our hair and exercise and take care of our bodies. These little girls often gather around, piled on my big bed, to watch me get ready for a date with dad or a dinner party. They see me deliberate over what to wear, and help me choose a fitting outfit and accessories for the occasion. They know that how we dress is an expression of our creativity, and reflects who we are. They love to choose what to wear each day, and they know how to match colors and styles, and how to dress modestly.

I want these girls to feel beautiful and feminine, and to seek beauty in the world around them. I want their outward appearance to reflect the divine beauty that they know lies within them. I hope that no matter their body shape, or hair texture, or eye color, they know that God created them in His image, and that they are special...and that they should use what He has given them to find joy and gratitude, and to be an influence for good in the world.

So, on the topic of femininity and clothes...let's talk wardrobe. (I had to photograph my newly-organized closet! woohoo!) Having a great wardrobe of wearable, comfortable clothes feels great! Here are a few tips I've learned over the years:

1. You don't need a lot of clothes and shoes to dress well and look great. This is top of the list for me. I'm definitely not a minimalist, though I strive to be one...but I've gotten pretty good at paring down when it comes to clothes. I grew up on a rigid budget, earning my own spending money from the time I could have a paper route. And then when I got married, my husband spent many years in graduate school while we were having and raising a family, so we lived on a tight budget as well. Not to mention that we've almost always had small closets! I've learned that if I had a few nice separates that can be mixed and matched, I can rotate them and dress well.

In my closet today: I have a few pairs of strait-legged jeans (to wear tucked into boots, or cuffed with sandals), one grey and one khaki pair of linen pants (to be worn wide-legged or pegged and cuffed), a casual tan capri, a black pair of pants, and a pair of wide-legged chambray pants. I have lots of tops to go with them, plenty of knits in whites and stripes. And some classic cardigans, wool for winter and cotton for summer. I have a few button-down blouses and fun jackets too. I have a chambray and a white long skirt, a couple of pencil skirts, and a few flowered skirts and dresses for summer. That's it.

And shoes? I love, love, love cute shoes. But if I buy good, classic shoes that won't go out of style, I don't feel the need to have a gazillion pairs. I keep a nice pair or two of ballet flats, a couple of nice heels, a pair of leather boots, a pair of rain/snow boots, and some nice summer sandals (two flat, and a couple of wedges or clogs). I find that if I buy a nice pair of shoes, it usually lasts for several years. (This summer, I splurged on some Swedish Hasbeens...for those of you who asked, they were the red ones in this post. And the nude ones in the photos below. I found them marked down here with free shipping. Don't pay full price...they're pricey!)

2. Collect basic wardrobe staples that fit well, and make you feel great when you wear them. Having six babies in ten years, I know the feeling great part can be tricky at times. Everything in my closet doesn't always fit me well. I still have a lingering 10 lbs. that I'm having a hard time shedding, so I have a box of smaller-sized classic clothes in storage. But I like to have at least a few pairs of pants, a few shirts, and a few skirts that fit well, no matter my size. If they are neutral/staples, they can be worn with any top and look great. And basics can be so inexpensive if you find them on sale or at discount or consignment stores. It really isn't hard to keep a few great looks in your closet!

3. Assess what you have in your closet at the beginning of every season. I like to look over my entire closet, try things on to see what fits well at the moment (see #2), and take an inventory. This usually keeps me from making impulsive purchases, because I have in mind what pieces I need (or would like) for the season, and what I already have that works. I generally make a few purchases to update for the season, or to fill in gaps when something doesn't fit right or seems worn out. I rarely shop in stores. Who has time? But when I need something, or see a great sale online, I take a virtual look at my favorite shops.

4. Give away what you don't wear. If I haven't worn something in over a year, I give it away (unless it's a classic, and I don't fit into it well...in hopes of losing weight and wearing it later, it goes into the storage box. sigh...) This keeps my closet from crowding up, and cuts out the work of caring for mass amounts of clothing. Plus, someone else gets something new in their wardrobe!

5. If you can't find it, make it! I know not everyone sews, but this has been super fun for me. If I need another skirt or top or dress, and can't find one that fits well, I love to make one! There's something special about creating something from start to finish and then putting it to use. Plus, it usually saves money...especially on dresses, which can be expensive at retail stores. Sewing skills can also come in handy when something needs to be hemmed or taken in or refashioned.

6. Accessorize. It has taken me a while to get used to accessories. I only own a few pieces of jewelry, and besides earrings (the same pair every day), I'm usually too lazy to put them on! But lately, I've tried to collect a few belts and scarves to dress up my classic look. Target has some darling scarves for a steal right now!

So, these tips aren't rocket science, nor do I profess to be any sort of expert on the topic of wardrobing :). But I do feel better in all aspects of life when I take a few moments to put myself together and dress the part! Happy wardrobing to you and yours!

kittens + cats + anatomy

Is there really such a thing as too many cats? I mean, we're bordering crazy-cat-lady territory around here with all the new babies, but somehow we're falling in love with them all! Nine kittens from two mama cats' litters have occupied our back porch for the past couple of months. They're so playful and fun, and we just can't get enough of them!

And honestly, what easy pets to keep around. They live outside, and sleep in the barn or under a blanket on the porch in the winter (okay, that sentence may have exceeded the preposition allowance for proper grammar, but who's counting?) Best of all, they eat all the pesky mice who would otherwise be occupying their former home under my kitchen sink! Three cheers for cats!

Oh, and while we're talking about the perks of cat-ownership, you should know that they're awfully handy for teaching anatomy to children. Yes, indeedy. I overheard one such lesson given to my little girls by a 9-yr. old neighbor girl the other day, while walking behind the daddy cat. "You know, if you get those little furry balls cut off, he won't be as wild and chase all the girl cats." Oh my. Anatomy 101 in the backyard. I ran away laughing, while they stood there with puzzled looks on their faces. Perhaps I'll explain it in more depth when we take the cats to get spayed/neutered. Perhaps...

This is Tuna. Our favorite of the new kitties. The one we decided to keep. Poor little one went missing a few days ago. We miss her. (sniff, sniff)

This is Reepicheep. Or is it Kojo? They're twins, recently adopted by some good friends. Now happily living in a large barn and eating lots of pesky barn birds and plenty of raw cow's milk.

And last, but not least, there's Pippin. Son of Sophie (from last year's litter), and uncle/brother/dad to the new kittens. (yes, it gets a little confusing when incestual relationships are involved! the confusion earned another anatomy lesson, of course...)
Anyway, Pippin...he's cool and calm, always lounging around or purring against your legs for some very subtle attention seeking. Sweet and lazy...nothing exciting with this one. Well, except that we thought he was a she until we saw how ~~she~~ he was interacting with the lady cats...namely his mother (for shame!). So Betsy had a name change, along with ~~her~~ his identity crisis, from Betsy to Pippin.
He's our favorite full-grown cat.

Our neighbors have baby guinea pigs, and Sam is begging to adopt one. Have any of you kept a guinea pig for a pet? What did you think of it? We had hamsters when I was a kid. And ever since then, I've shied away from caged animals...they seem to be so stinky! Am I wrong?

But, you know what my very favorite part of the weekend was? (well, besides having the Mr. home for an extra day...) It was singing America the Beautiful with the congregation at our Sunday worship services. Have you sung it lately? I mean, really sung it? You know, paying attention to the message, and surrounded with people you love? I did on Sunday. And the lyrics struck my soul so profoundly that tears welled up in my eyes and ran down my cheeks. The third and fourth verses get me every time.

Heroes proved. Liberating strife. More than self their country loved. Mercy more than life.

white summer dresses + a Josefina skirt

The Liberty Girls Retreat was quickly approaching, and to keep with tradition, the girls needed Josefina dresses!

(Remember these Kit dresses? And these Felicity dresses?

Makes me want to be young again and dress up like my heroes!)

I decided to sew up some cute white summer dresses,

and put an elastic-waist Mexican-style skirt over them for the retreat.

Now my girls have new white dresses for Sundays this summer!

I based the pattern off of Simplicity 2377, with some variations.

I didn't have any thin elastic in my stash, so I used the shirring method. I hand-wound elastic thread onto the bobbin, and then I began sewing on the largest stitch setting, at the shoulder, and spiraled my way down until I had sewn several rows. Then, I steam-ironed it to shrink it all up pretty! I did the same on the sleeves. I love, love, love how it turned out! We want to make some summer blouses now too!

While we're on the subject of shirring, some of you asked for the pattern I used in these summer dresses. I made them the same way. I made a tube with the dress fabric, using the width of the fabric with a seam down the back, and then hemmed the top and bottom. Then I started at the back center, and spiraled my way down until it was the length I wanted. We prefer sleeves to sleeveless (for modesty's sake), even in summer, so I added sleeves via Dana's shirt dress tutorial. I simply cut (gasp!)...yes, cut right through the shirring, and sewed sleeves on! I held my breath the first time I did this, but it worked out fine! I made up the sleeves using Dana's tutorial, and then sinched them at the shoulder and arm with more shirring.

It's so fun to study an American Girl all sememster, and then spend a day "living in" her world!

The retreat was super fun. We played games, made homemade corn tortillas and salsa, learned latin dancing, weaved on a mini-loom, and carded and spun wool...just like Josefina did!

Now, if I can only find a minute to make one more white dress...

Last weekend, we celebrated my mom's 70th birthday. And had a little family reunion. Some if it was spent at our family cabin up in Sundance. What a perfectly beautiful spot!! It was fun to see each other, and great to get out of town and up into those majestic mountains. I can almost smell the fresh air and feel the cool breeze as I write this...

Isn't it sublime? Wish we could go back this weekend!

Instead, we'll be finishing the garden and celebrating DAD!

homemade ice cream

We love to make homemade ice cream when it's sunny and hot outside!

We still have the old ice cream maker we got for our wedding 15 years ago...and it works great. The best thing about it is that it makes 6 quarts of ice cream in one batch! And in only 40 minutes churning time...easy peasy!

Here's the recipe I used for my 6-quart machine (a variation of one I found on Kelly the Kitchen Kop):

Real Food Strawberry Ice Cream:

4 cups mashed strawberries

Juice from 3 lemons

2 1/4 cups real maple syrup

9 egg yolks from healthy, pasture-fed chickens

3 t. vanilla

3 T. arrowroot powder

3 cups raw whole milk

7 1/2 cups heavy cream

Mix all ingredients well, and pour into ice cream maker. Process according to manufacturer instructions.

If you have a smaller machine, just cut the quantities by 1/2 or 1/3 accordingly.

There's nothing as delicious as some good, homemade ice cream!

More outside summer fun! The kids and I are loving this warm weather...at last!

My friend Stephanie is doing "no tv month" in June with her family.

An entire month with no screens...no movies or tv shows at all. Zero. She's flat-out awesome.

As for our family, we're putting away all video games, and doing no computer (except for math and my blogging, of course!) all summer. We'll have no tv or movies at all on weekdays (once the NBA basketball finals are over!), and movies only for occasional date nights or family movie nights on the weekends. (This is actually our general rule, but we've slacked off a bit these past few months.) Really, who needs screen time with the sunny, beautiful weather out there?

What about you? Do you do tv during the summer?

all-day outdoors

I loved this post over at Design Mom. Gabrielle visited Sweden (I want to go there someday!), and had lots to say about their amazing culture. Kids there spend hours every day outdoors, no matter the weather. She said that the babies in Sweden nap outdoors, even in cold weather. And some of the preschools there have no building...just outdoor play all day. My good friend Katie lived there for a spell, and I remember her telling me about the Swedish philosophy that Gabrielle pointed out, "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing."

I love that!! We feel strongly that our kids should spend lots of time outside, in nature. I love seeing them explore and experience the many miraculous, divinely-made beauties that surround us. And they love it too...all year round! It keeps their bodies and minds healthy and fresh, and provides so many opportunities for creativity. Oh, the forts and hide-outs and inventions...and the made-up games of tag and chase and war and pretend! It goes on all day around here!

Now that the sunny weather has finally come, we can't get enough! Our family kickball game didn't end until after 9:00 last night. We love summertime!!

The girls' current favorite outside play consists of water, mud, and lots of creativity. And it makes me want to be five again.

Finally! Warm sunshine has replaced the rain around here!

We got outside yesterday to work on some projects.

After a long trip to the local hardware store, and a truck full of wood, Taylor built some garden boxes for our new garden spot. Square-foot style. Can't wait to fill them with dirt and get planting!!

Some neighbor boys are helping build a chicken run for the birds.

The little guys love to help their big brother and they work so hard...so so cute!

holiday weekending

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

We did!

We had a neighborhood softball game with friends (the guys needed an extra 'man' so I played too...ouch, I'm sore!!)
ate our favorite Indian Food,
saw this movie
and this one (cried in both),
watched Stephanie on Glenn's program (cried again...she's amazing!),
went on a bike ride with my man,
did some knitting,
read more of War and Peace and started watching the movie while the kids played outside. (classic Audrey...love!) Good book for reflecting...and pausing and remembering loved ones on Memorial Day,
had friends over for brunch (traditional southern breakfast with grits--made by my man),
visited my dad's and grandparents' gravesites with my mom and brother,
and LOVED having our Daddy home from work for a long weekend.

Today, we're heading outside to start the garden. Because it has finally stopped raining and the beautiful sun is shining! Hooray!!

First, turn off the loud music and study a bit! Old Testament, a chapter aloud of Mara, Daughter of the Nile, math, reading lessons, and grammar. Better get to it!!

fighting the weeds

Our backyard is full of dandelions. And I mean full. They pop up all splendidly yellow and pretty, and make our property look like a spring meadow. Then, they turn white, and send little fuzzies flying through the air to cover e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. (including the insides of nostrils...not so fun, for those with allergies!) Suddenly their fresh yellow glamour wanes, and they reveal their true identity as a very invasive weed, taking over our beautiful, green grass with a vengeance.

There are too many of them to pull by hand. Even with eight pairs of hands, it would be nearly impossible to uproot them all. The boys mow the grass, and within an hour (no joke), the dandelions rear their tenacious heads...again and again. They're relentless. Noxious weed killers are out of the question, because of the roaming chickens, free-ranging on our pasture and its insect inhabitants. Plans for a new chicken run are in the works...if the chickens can be contained, we'll be able to work on this weed problem. (And we'll be able to see our back patio floor and table, which now lie buried under a winter's worth of stinky chicken p**p. Bonus!)

Sometimes, I feel like I'm living in the midst of that dandelion meadow. Life seems to creep up around me with vigor, and I lack the energy or resolution to maintain control of it. These past few months, I have worked hard on some big projects (like the new studio and my BYU Women's Conference presentation, amidst other crazy endeavors). It felt good to stretch myself and accomplish. Then I had a glamorous and exciting weekend in NYC with my sweetheart. Our time together during that break from the everyday was like wading in the flowery spring meadow (...except for the tall buildings and hoards of noisy people everywhere, of course :). It was perfectly lovely and renewing.

Then I came home. To what felt like weeds. The yellow beauty had faded, and back into my mundane reality I jumped. Piles of laundry. Cooking. Cleaning. Educating. Mothering. A roof that leaks in all this rain. Half-painted, half-functional rooms that need finishing. A garden that needs tilling and planting. Flowerbeds that need attention. Farm animals that need attention. Kids that need attention. Wow. It can all feel so daunting and complicated sometimes.

So, as I gradually chip away at the laundry, make plans for the garden and beds, and go from quick and easy meals back to the more nutritious and fancy fare, I have consciously decided to let myself slowly climb back into things around here. The weeds aint goin' anywhere, so I may as well take time to look inward and upward, and nurture my ability and desire to tackle them. I try to slow down, and say no to outside extra's. I try to play with my kids. I make time to relax and give myself a break. I read a good book. I watch a good movie. I knit. And I pray...lots. That's how I get through when the weeds of life seem too high and fierce to conquer...with some Heavenly help and earthly inspiration.

I don't worry as much about the mounting household tasks...I work on them a little each day, and get lots of help from the kids. I've brought home bread from the grocery store. And even some cold cereal and boxed snacks. I've put aside a few home improvement projects, and allowed myself room to breathe. I watched all 3 Lord of the Rings movies with my hubby and boys last weekend. (LOVE those!) I took my girls shopping and to lunch, and then watched Little Women with them. I read/listened to a good chunk of War and Peace (finally getting into it!). I lit a fire whenever it rained. I drove my kids to their last Shakespeare performance in scenic Heber City yesterday. (A beautiful drive and a wonderful performance!) I went on long bike rides. I cast on for a new knitted sweater. I ate ice cream. I gathered with some awesome youth to discuss Lois Lowry's The Giver. I sewed a little. I read to my kids. I spent the day visiting with a good friend.

When I feel overwhelmed, and I can't seem to see beyond the weeds, I take time to nurture my own body and soul. I gain strength and excitement, and the weeds seem less significant and invasive. They don't go away. But I have better perspective, and can see them for what they are, rather than let them take over and control me. And it feels good.

I often have moms say to me, "how do you have time to sew and knit and read and do projects? I can hardly keep up on the laundry and dishes!" I tell you that it is through these creative outlets--making time to do things I love--that I find energy to do more of the work in my home. I don't always keep up with laundry and dishes...but I do better at keeping up, and find more joy in doing so, as I regularly fill myself with inspiration and energy by making time to nurture and build myself. I make a better home for my family when I am a better person.

sarah jane

Have you gone over to see Sarah Jane's brand new debut fabric line? It's so pretty!

Lots of reds and pinks and purples...darling! All scattered with Sarah Jane sketches. Perfection. And boy fabric as well...it's seriously the cutest I've ever seen. Windmills, paper hats and airplanes, rockets, bikes, wagons, scooters, and stripes...oh boy!

I had a great time sewing up this sundress for her booth at Quilt Market. Her booth looks like a little piece of Heaven, to me! Go check out the photos of it on her blog.

And most of all, I had a great time getting to know Sarah. She's an amazing artist and mother. Not sure how she accomplishes all that she does...but she does it all, and she does it well. She's an inspiration to me!

While I sewed, I had little helpers ransacking my fabric scrap stash, and making some things of their own. Of course.

birthday boy

My firstborn turned 14.

Which means:

a) I'm getting old.

b) we're getting thicker into the teenage years around here. Heaven help us.

c) he's officially taller than me.

d) he notices how his hair looks and how girls look. Though he would never admit to either...shhh!

e) it's now easier to find my iphone when I misplace it. Because he always knows where it is, as he is continually texting a friend or waiting for a reply. (Is there an AT&T plan for limited texts from teenage girls? I want that one.)

f) he prides himself in wearing skinny jeans, flat-brimmed hats, a beanie when it's warm outside, lime green v-necks, and bright blue skater shoes. (I'm trying to embrace his self-expression...)

g) I only have 4 years left with him at home...I'd better ignore the girls, texting, and clothing tastes and just love him for the great person he is!

We celebrated his birthday while Nana was in town. Lucky Taylor. She bought him a delicious made-to-order Cold Stone Creamery ice cream cake, which we devoured in one sitting. mmmm.

Despite his teenage-hood, this boy of mine is fantastic.

In his handmade Mother's Day card he wrote,

"Thank you for being the best mom ever! I love you and I will try to be the best son ever."

This melted my heart. You are a wonderful son, Taylor.

And I love you, too!

Nobody's perfect around here (or even close, for that matter), but we do so love being a family!

New York, New York

Hello friends!
I'm still here! I'm sorry for the lack of posts. And for the delay in answeringyour sweet comments and emails. I'm a little behind!
Why, you ask?

Because my dear hubby and Iplayed hookie and ran off to New York for the weekend!

The weather was perfectly springtime...lotsof sunshine and cool breezes.

We walked all over the city,

saw lots of sites,

and ate so much great food!!
I wore stripes, ballet flats, scarves, and even some red lipstick.
Very New York, don't you agree?

We also did some shopping. Well I did the shopping, while he did the napping. Literally. He dozed off on the soft SoHo JCrew couch. I thinkthey keep that very comfy couch in the store for weary, shop-worn husbands. Poor fellow. And he didn't even complain. Just opened hiseyes every now and then to nod and tell me I looked great in whatever I was trying on. He rocks!

We really had the time of ourlives.

And spoiling a certain birthday boy, who happens to have recently surpassed me in height. (can I really be the mother of a 14-year-old?!!)
And we spent today at the Renaissance Faire, where the boys performed scenes from their Shakespeare play, the girls rode ponies and got their faces painted like fairies, and we watched some exciting vaulting and jousting.
And tonight? Sushi and a movie with my man.
The weather is finally warm and sunny around here...guess I should start thinking about that yard and garden plot out there, huh? Sounds like a good weekend plan...

a new dress in an old place

I have had the itch to make something new...

for ME!

So, last Wednesday,

I took a break from my long preparation for the presentation I would give in just two days,

and made a dress.

for ME!

I used the Dirndl dress pattern from Built by Wendy Dresses. It's the same pattern I used for my summer dress last year. I added pintucks at the top, because the neck was a bit gapey, and made the skirt a bit more full. I lined it with wedding dress polyester lining, for a smooth fit. The outer fabric is from a duvet cover purchased at IKEA. I wanted the included striped pillowcases for my white bed, and thought the fabric would make a lovely, classic dress. I love how it turned out!

I wore it the first day of BYU Women's Conference.

It was a beautiful spring day...the sun was shining, and I felt warmed with a flood of happy memories as I walked the campus of my alma mater. I attended inspiring classes, and spent time alone in the very quiet library, preparing my presentation for Friday. I remembered sitting in those same cubicles, with my big hair and oversized sweater, eating Swedish fish, and studying for an exam or writing a paper... waaaay back in the day.

My, how time has passed. As I paced the isles of the of the library last week, I thought, "here I am now, mother of 6, married to the man of my dreams, studying about motherhood, homemaking, and nutrition, and preparing to teach hundreds about what I've learned over the years...all since those long-gone college days, many of which were spent in that very same library. I've been so blessed. So very blessed."

Time...

years

months

days

hours

and minutes

have a way of rolling ever forward.

And what we do with them

defines who we become.

Time...

in mortality

is temporary and so fleeting.

Given to us as a gift...

to be used to prepare for the eternities

that await us in another realm of time.

I look back, and feel so thankful for my life. I am so very far from being who I want to become, and I have surely wasted many precious moments in time. But I feel so blessed to be living and learning today. And for the love of so many wonderful people who surround me and teach me.

A big thanks to all of you who came to support me in my Friday session of Women's Conference. It meant a lot to me! I feel honored to have been a part of such an amazing event!

Easter skirts

We had a lovely Easter weekend! We celebrated as a family and enjoyed the beautiful spirit of the day, as we talked about our Savior and his great love for us. We watched a touching film made by the LDS Church, called To This End Was I Born. It's on youtube in three parts here, here, and here. Watch it if you haven't...so well done! I felt moved and loved and grateful.

I was planning on making each of the boys a tie, but didn't get to it...bummer! And these layered ruffle skirts for the girls had been collecting dust in my project basket...half done a few years ago, and needing to be finished. I love how they turned out...some of my favorite fabric ever! And it only took an hour or so to finish all three...perfect!

I'll post a tutorial soon...I've made a few like these, and they're so so simple and fun!

Meahwhile,
I'm trying to finish my dress for Women's Conference this week,
getting ready for mom-in-law, sister-in-law, and neice to arrive this afternoon,
